Pandemic thoughtstream 3 - the videos
I had thought I’d have time to work and do stuff during these weeks at home… but… KIDS.
Lots of fun videos going around social media (for those of us privileged to see these things in our feeds).
Hey musicians and artist friends, share these videos and please TAG NON-MUSICIANS specifically. You must have at least one friend who is not a musician. They don’t see the French National Ballet, or the awesome Juilliard Bolero unless you share it with them. Take over their walls with art and beauty rather than factionalized political memes.
Should we start a scorecard to rate the videos? What are the criteria? I hope someone is creating an archive of the isolation-videos. This may very well change how we share music and social media from now on… These videos would make great season announcements…
Difficulty? Well, ensemble may not be so difficult now that many are using click-tracks… But sometimes someone plays lots of different instruments, and that’s not easy. How about doing a video of the opening of Don Juan? Given how many string players have submitted the opening for an audition, I bet we could just make an open call for that excerpt and have enough material submitted within minutes.
Editing Creativity? Yeah, we love the videos seeing four voices being performed by one person, but for all of our hyperactive internet generation folks, you must include some clever fades/pans/motion/etc. effects, otherwise you have just lost anyone younger than 30. Variety and editing wins lots of points here.
Repertoire? No complaints here, lots of great music to choose from, especially if we’re only doing excerpts. BUT how about some music by living composers? Is this a publisher/rights limitation? Now is NOT the time. Reach out to the composers and work something out with them. The only exposure we seem to be talking about is virus exposure, but we need some NEW MUSIC EXPOSURE!!
Variety? I like the mixed-media approach, with some instruments, singing, dancing etc. Why limit to one genre?
More ideas? Send them my way!
